At Coastal Allergy Care we help our patients identify what they are allergic to. We may do allergy testing to try and figure out what is triggering our patient’s allergic rhinitis, asthma, and/or sinus problems. If we identify specific allergens like dust mites, molds, animal dander, or pollen Dr. Cristina Porch, Melissa PA-C, or Derek PA-C will outline an appropriate treatment plan. We discuss different options for treatment including avoidance, medications, and if indicated allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots or sublingual tablets). We also frequently recommend following pollen counts so a patient can do their best to avoid potential triggers. As per Dr. Lanier’s recent article in EVERYDAY HEALTH most of these counts are based on predictions of what will pollinate rather than what is actually pollinating. These predictions are not always accurate. They give us a basic idea of what is happening in our local environment but it’s important not to micromanage based on what these counts report. This is especially true here in Southern California as the California flora does not follow the “classic” pollination seasons. We do anticipate some higher pollen counts this year since we actually had a little rain. For more information on how the pollen counts are predicted please read Dr. Lanier’s article.
